An elegant, lightweight envelope transitions in colour from anthracite at the lower levels to white above, merging visually with the sky. The existing asbestos- and mineral-fibre-based façade is replaced by a largely recyclable construction using wood, glass, metal and prefabricated aerated-concrete parapets. A double-skin façade combines a robust inner layer with a delicate outer layer of operable glass louvers. Together with integrated solar shading, natural ventilation and night cooling, it forms a dynamic climate envelope that improves thermal comfort, daylight and energy performance while reducing dependence on complex building services. At ground level, the façade is opened and set back to expand the campus cafeteria and create a new public space. Dark metal cladding and generous glazing define the entrance zone, while the stair tower is distinguished by black brickwork. The modular 1.2-meter grid is retained to support flexible future layouts. Prefabricated, dry-assembled components enable a phased renovation while the building remains in operation. Maintenance and replacement are designed to be carried out from inside or within the façade cavity, eliminating the need for extensive access equipment.
"",2,[],"design",[19,25,33
Office",[22
Allmann Wappner Architekten","https://www.allmannwappner.com/en/
Project Team",[28,29,30,31,32],"Philipp Vogeley (Lead)","Maximilian Jüngling (Project Lead)","Dominik Reisach","Štěpánka Úlehlová","Simon Köppl
Visualization",[36
Grauwald Studio","https://grauwald-studio.com/","md",3
/imgs/2019-07_appelstrasse/uh7_dr","© Allmann Wappner Architekten",[45,47,49,51,53
/imgs/2019-07_appelstrasse/uh2_dr
/imgs/2019-07_appelstrasse/uh3_dr
/imgs/2019-07_appelstrasse/uh4_dr
/imgs/2019-07_appelstrasse/uh5_dr
"/imgs/2019-07_appelstrasse/uh0_dr",true,{},8,"/work/2019-07_appelstrasse","Façade Refurbishment Appelstrasse, Hanover, DE
work/2019-07_appelstrasse","/imgs/2019-07_appelstrasse/uh0_dr_thumb.avif","Competition",2019,"Ebb6gj0VsfOC0r5lvvmYEUG7RcRpoirETWn2BA3o9Ec",1786439735757]
